AC Repair in Santa Fe, NM
Most Santa Fe AC calls in June are a capacitor, a dirty coil, or a cooler someone expected to be an air conditioner. July adds iced evaporators and condensate overflows. We repair what failed. “Needs freon” every summer is a leak, not a subscription. 505-316-4231.

Charge is not a tune-up
If we add refrigerant, we look for the leak. A unit that is empty every June has a hole. We will dye or listen before we just fill it again.
June is capacitors; July is ice
First hot week is usually a capacitor or a dirty coil. Monsoon humidity adds iced evaporators and condensate that finds a closet. We start with airflow, not a sealed-system invoice.
Coolers are still on this truck
A lot of “AC” calls are a cooler pan, float, or pump. We service those. We will not sell a condenser because someone expected a swamp cooler to dehumidify.
Low on refrigerant means it has a leak
Refrigerant is not a fuel. If the system is low, the charge left through a leak at a flare, a coil, or a rub-through on the line set. Adding charge without finding the leak is how you buy the same repair twice and how refrigerant ends up where it should not. We will say that before we hook up gauges. Small leaks get repaired. A coil that is a pinhole farm on a 20-year-old system is a replacement conversation, with the repair price next to it so you can see the difference.
Capacitors, contactors, and the no-cool that is electrical
A lot of “no cool” calls in the first hot week are a capacitor or a contactor, not a compressor. The fan does not start, or the compressor hums and shuts off. We test the capacitor. We do not sell a compressor for a $30 part. We also do not sell a capacitor for a compressor that is shorted to ground. The meter decides. A clogged filter or a collapsed return will freeze the coil and look like low charge. We look at the coil and the filter before we condemn the charge.
Drainage and the ceiling stain
A cooling system pulls moisture even in a dry climate, and that water has to leave. A plugged condensate drain overflows the pan into a ceiling. The repair is the drain, the float switch if there isn’t one, and the dry-out. It is not a new air handler. We clear the drain and we show you the safety switch. If the pan rusted through, the pan is the part. People call this an AC repair and they are right. It is also the repair that prevents the next leak-detection call.
Coolers are not AC, and we still fix them
If the house cools with a swamp cooler, say so. Pads, a pump, a belt, a spider full of scale from hard water, and a float that does not shut off are the work. Hard Santa Fe water crusts cooler spiders every season. That is a cleaning and a pad, not a refrigerant system. We will not quote a condenser for a cooler problem. If you want to abandon the cooler, that is the installation conversation, and it belongs on that page with a real load calculation.
When we stop for the night
If the part is on the truck, we finish. If the part is a coil or a compressor we do not carry, we leave the system safe and we order it. We do not jury-rig a bypass that leaves a leak open. After-hours cool is uncomfortable here and it is rarely a middle-of-the-night emergency the way a flood is. We will still answer 505-316-4231. We will tell you if morning is the honest plan. Gauges last, not first
Filter, coil, outdoor fan, capacitor, contactor, and the drain. Then gauges, if the symptoms still say refrigerant. Hooking up gauges is a way to lose a little charge and a way to skip the capacitor that was the whole call. We test the capacitor under load conditions that mean something. A compressor that is hot and locked out gets time to cool and a hard start only if the windings say it is worth trying. A compressor that is shorted is a replacement conversation. We do not add refrigerant to a shorted compressor to “see what happens.”
Leak search when the charge is low
Soap, detector, or dye depending on the system and how empty it is. Evaporator coils leak. Outdoor coils leak. Flares on mini-splits leak. Rub-throughs on line sets leak where the pipe touches a roof edge. We look at the likely spots before we quote a full coil. If the coil is the leak and the system is old, you get repair versus replace on one page. Adding charge and leaving is not on that page. A temporary charge so you have cooling for a weekend can be discussed when the leak is found and the part is ordered. It is not a permanent repair and we will not label it as one.
Cooler repairs, so they are not lost
Pads that are caked with minerals, a pump that hums and moves no water, a belt that is gone, a float that overflows into the drip pan and then into the duct. Hard water is why the spider looks like chalk. We clean or replace it. We set the bleed so the pan stays fresher. If the duct from the cooler is the smell, we say the duct, not another bottle of perfume. A cooler that cannot keep up on a 96-degree afternoon may still be a cooler problem — pads and airflow — and not a sign you must buy a condenser this week. If you want that project, it is a different quote. 505-316-4231. License 384927.
Capacitor, leak, or a cooler that was never an AC
The first hot week kills capacitors and contactors. We test them before we touch the charge. Low charge is a leak, and the leak is found or the system is not called repaired. A coil replacement versus a new system is a side-by-side number on older equipment. Drain pans that overflow are AC repairs too, and they are cheaper than people fear when we get there before the ceiling fails. Swamp coolers get pads, pumps, spiders, floats, and belts. Hard water is why they chalk up. We will not quote refrigerant for a cooler, and we will not quote a cooler pump for a condenser. If you do not know which you have, look outside: a box with a fan and a pad is a cooler; a box with a fan and a coil and a copper line is refrigerated. Send a photo if you want. After-hours cooling is rarely the same emergency as a flood. We answer the phone and we will tell you if dawn is the right call. If the compressor is the failure, dawn does not change the part availability, and we will not jury-rig a bypass. 505-316-4231. The invoice names the part and the reading. License 384927. Ice, a dead fan, or a cooler that smells
Ice on the line usually means airflow or low charge, and we prove which before we add anything. A fan that hums and does not spin is often the capacitor. A system that cools for ten minutes and quits may be the same capacitor or a freeze-up from a filter. A roof unit that smells like a wet dog is a cooler, and the repair is pads, a pump, and the mineral crust hard water leaves. Tell us which picture matches. Do not hose ice off a coil and run it. Let it thaw or let us thaw it so we can see the coil. If you already had someone add refrigerant last month and it is low again, say that. The leak did not heal. We look for it. 505-316-4231.
What we actually get called for
Not a generic list — these are the failures this climate and housing stock produce.
Fan runs, no cold
Compressor, capacitor, or charge. We test.
Ice on the line
Airflow first. Charge second.
Water at the closet
Drain. Not a new system.
Needs freon every June
That is a leak. We look for it. A subscription charge is not a repair.
How a job runs
Electrical and airflow
The cheap failures first.
Sealed system only if needed
Quoted before we recover.
Same-day if the part is on the truck
Capacitors and many motors, yes. Compressors and coils are ordered.
Questions people ask before they call
Can you repair AC the same day?
Capacitors, contactors, and many motors, yes if they are on the truck. Compressors and coils are ordered. We will cool the house with what we can that day.
Do you work on evaporative coolers too?
Yes — pads, pumps, floats, and leaks. A cooler is still cooling equipment in this town.
Is “it just needs freon” a real diagnosis?
Refrigerant does not get used up. If it is low, there is a leak. We will say that before we add charge again.
City pages that stay
